These were part of a series inspired by the ancient Cretan Palace of Knossos.

The detail shows the great textures that you get when rasping down through layers of paint. This digging down through layers and the sculptural edges are what I really loved about painting on wood. You just can't do that on canvas. You can also drill into wood panel, gouge it, tear the edge with pliers but it is much heavier. Oh dear, the plusses and minuses to choose from...
